Rising in Humor
could I BE any funnier?
Okay, so you know how Substack has these “Rising in [insert category]” lists? Well. Yesterday, I received a notification that I was 95th in Humor. Which is another way of saying that out of 100 funny writers on Substack, I was fifth from dead last. I was going to take a screenshot to commemorate my big moment but got distracted (#titleofmynextmemoir) and when I went back to check, I discovered that I was no longer 95th. I was, in fact, no longer on the list at all.
And then it hit me. I may not excel at humor, but I excel at sarcasm, and if sarcasm, as Oscar Wilde once quipped, is the lowest form of wit, it stands to reason that I am at the very bottom of the Rising in Humor category. However, “sarcasm is the lowest form of wit” is only the first part of Wilde’s quip. The whole quip goes, “Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence.” There’s even an article in Scientific American linking sarcasm to higher levels of creativity. Who’s laughing now, huh?
